Gorgas Memorial Library Frequently Asked Questions

How can I obtain library privileges?
A: To register as a library patron, visit the Gorgas Memorial Library website at Go to the “General Resources” section and complete the Online Patron Registration form. Once established, you can use this account to check out library resources, review your account status online, renew materials, and set up preferences and alerts in GML OneSearch globe4.gif.

Alternatively, just stop by the Gorgas Memorial Library and visit the staff at the Information Desk.

When can I use the library?
A: The Gorgas Memorial Library is staffed Monday through Friday 07:30 to 16:30. Outside of these hours, simply swipe your badge on the device to the left of the entrance doors to gain access to the library.Maps of the library stack area are available at the Information Desk.

Where can I get reference help?
A: The Information Desk is located at the entrance of the library and is generally staffed daily from 7:45 to 16:30. The telephone number is 301-319-9555.

How can I request a literature search to comply with IACUC requirements for my research project?
A: The library provides expert searches upon request to meet individual needs, especially those related to animal use protocol requirements. Librarians perform Dialog, BRD, DTIC, PubMed, NIH RePORTER, Agricola and other database searches upon request. Search request forms are available in the library or may be submitted using the online Search Request form. How long can I keep a book out?
A: Material from the General Collection in any format (books, audiocassettes, videotapes) can be checked out for two weeks and may be renewed twice for additional two week periods. Reference books and journals, bound or unbound, may not be checked out.

Items can be renewed online by signing in to GML OneSearch globe4.gif and accessing your account. Alternatively, you may renew in person by visiting the library or by phone (301-319-9555).

How can I learn more about the library?
A: Library staff would be happy to provide a personalized orientation to library services. Call 301-319-9555 to set up a customized training session. Generally, library orientations include a demonstration of the library's Web site at with special emphasis on the following resources:

  • Databases, such as Web of Science and PubMed
  • Methods for electronically ordering documents
  • Full-text books, such as Plotkin’s Vaccines (2008) or Countering bioterrorism : the role of science and technology (2002)
Participants will also be shown the shelving locations for materials such as:

  • Book collection
  • Current & older journals
  • Selected new journal issues
  • New books

Whom do I contact if I am having trouble accessing one of the library's electronic resources?
A: If you need help, either visit or call the Gorgas Memorial Library at 301-319-9555 or submit your question via email to The Library staff will reply to emails within one business day.

What are the library's photocopying policies?
A: The library provides a free self-service copier for WRAIR/NMRC staff. This machine is primarily for copying library materials. It is located in the general library workroom to the right of the library entrance as you face out.

Is there a FAX or scanner I can use in the library?
A: The library provides access to a free self-service FAX for WRAIR/NMRC staff for official Government business. The FAX machine is located in the general library workroom (1W61) to the right of the library entrance as you face out.

For WRAIR staff who have CAC cards, there is a scanner available in the library for official Government business. Stop by or call the Information Desk (x9155) to arrange a mutually convenient time to use the scanner.

How can I email the PDF forms on the library website?
A: To enable use of the library’s pdf forms, follow these (one-time) steps.

Open Adobe Reader
  • Go to edit preferences internet
  • Make sure the checkbox for "Display PDf in browser" is unchecked
  • Close Adobe Reader
Click the start button
  • On the right-hand side, click the option for "default programs“
  • Select "Associate a file type or protocol with a program“
  • Scroll down to where it says ".pdf"
  • Double-click .pdf and select "Nuance PDF Converter Professional”
  • Click "OK“
These steps assure that a user can email the form by clicking on the “SEND” button at the bottom of the form. Once the configuration is complete, it will be in place to enable the email feature for all future forms used.
Alternatively, each time a form is needed, the user may simply save the form on his/her computer and attach it to an email addressed to;
