To graduate fully competent preventive medicine physicians who expertly apply population-based methods in operational, research, and clinical settings to optimize the public’s health, provide technical expertise across the full spectrum of PM activities, and promote continuing medical education activities for military physicians.
The WRAIR has consistently achieved the maximum 5 year accreditation by Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Our major accomplishments include:
  • Over 160 graduates from 1965 to the present
  • Two residents were recognized with the American College of Preventive Medicine’s Resident of the Year award in 2010 and 2011
  • Very high board exam pass rate (98.6%)
Research Priorities
  • Residents participate in a unique array of projects and experiences, including outbreak investigations, overseas research at WRAIR laboratories, Biological Threat Reduction Program capacity building, public health evaluations with the US Army Public Health Command, and research projects at WRAIR.
  • Residents obtain epidemiology and subject matter expertise, resulting in the publication of 5-10 manuscripts each year during training by the residents.
To apply
You may apply for Preventive Medicine as a PGY-1 or PGY-2 in the same way as any other specialty via the Army GME website. The PM internship is a transitional year, but you can select a Preventive Medicine preliminary as your affiliation. Please contact the residency director for further information.
